Te Ara Reo Mäori is designed for adult learners and employs a unique learning style called “Ako Whakatere”. The programme is taught over 36 weeks, including four one-day wänanga noho marae plus tutorials and self-directed learning per week. Classes and tutorials are friendly, interactive and fun.
Your learning will include:
- Basic phrases and apply them to everyday situations:
- Living in Aotearoa
- Mihi (formal and informal greetings)
- Wähi (locality)
- Telling the time
- Travelling around
- Mäori customs and protocols
- Whakapapa (genealogy and cultural identity)
- He tikanga marae (customs and protocols on the marae)
- The background and practice of waiata
- Participation in a noho marae visit.
Further Study:
Upon graduation, you will have the skills to study te reo Mäori at level 3, either within Te Wänanga o Aotearoa or at other institutions.

Overview: People matter! If you are about wanting to make a positive difference then this is the program for you! This foundation programme is the place to start your career in social services. It will prepare you for work in a non-clinical support setting. In a wide range of community/iwi development roles. The programme also provides a pathway to professional social work training.
Industry based training for one day or two evenings per week, to suit your work commitments (especially for those already within the social services sector and working for a minimum of 10 (ten) hours per week paid or unpaid).
